Alstroemeria pseudospatulata (Repollito amarillo)
This alstroemeria is quite rare in Chile, it is found only in a small area of about 100 km2. It has beatiful yellow flowers, which, combined with the low height of the plant, make it an excellent potting plant. It needs soil with good drainage and is very hardy (where it lives, the snow cover lasts for up to 6 months). When transplanting, special care must be exercised, because, unlike other alstroemerias which tolerate transplanting without any problems, this alstroemeria has problems for regenerating damaged roots.

Alstroemeria umbellata (Lirio de cordillera rosado)
As many Chilean alstroemerias, this is a very beatiful flower. It has the advanatage that it grows low, and is ideally suited for potting, although of course it can be grown outside. The place where it grows is covered with snow for more than 4 months and - 10º C is frequent here" It needs loose, poor soil with good drainage and moderate watering.

Araucaria araucana (Araucaria, Pehuén, Piñonero)
No doubt that this is one of the most famous Chilean plants. It is huge, tall, sturdy, strange-looking, it bark very reminiscent of the dinosaur skin, and this comparision is not too far fetched, because it is one of the oldest families of trees on earth. In addition, it also one of the long-living species, and there are many treees older than 1000 years. The only inconvenience is that it grows very slowly. On the positive side, it is ideally suited for beginners, because no matter how badly you botch it up, the seeds will germinate anyway, and because the seeds are so big, it a couple of weeks you obtain an established plant (10 - 15 cm).

Gaultheria pumila (Chaura)
This is one of my favorites, "chaura," a small, hardy plant which feels at home both at high altitudes and lowlands, tolerates snowy winters, dry and wet soils. It is also perfectly suited for potting, because generally it is not very big (20 - 30 cm). It has very sweet edible white or reddish fruits which taste somewaht like vanilla. When flowering, it is speckled with small, but very numerous, beatifully shaped white flowers.

This is another endemic Chilean plant, which can not be found anywhere out side Chile. The only requirement it has is a lot of water. It would grow perfectly well in cold climates (being annual plant, it will sow itself automatically at the end of the season, so that you would not have any worries in the next season).

Rhodophiala andicola (Añañuca de los volcanes)
This is a Rhodophiala of the Southern Andes of Chile, very characteristic of the volcano landscapes - it has rather small flowers, pinkish-red in color, which generally do not open as much as the other Rhodophialas (they are bell-shaped), giving thus an impression of being even smaller (this may be the result of the harsher climate). It may be less impressive than the other Rhodophialas due to its smaller size of the flower, short stems, and the fact that the flowers are solitary, but it is surprising how well this plant copes with the harsh conditions of the high mountains and barren soils - it is indeed a special pleasure to discover a delicately looking flower on a black lava slope covered with razor-sharp stones"

Rhodophiala splendens (Añañuca esplendorosa)
This is one of the most beatiful flowers of the Central Andes of Chile - it is big, and its brightly-colored flowers lightens up the barren slopes with red spots in the early spring, sometimes competing with the brightness of glistening snow, creating a truly otherwordly Alpine landscape. The flower presents itself with almost no leaves when it flourishes, which often heigthens even more the contrast with the surrounding - red flowers on bare stems on yellow sand, white snow, black stones, andnothing else.
