| IF YOU ARE JUST BEGINNING TO GET
TO KNOW THE CHILEAN PLANTS... |
Here you
will find plants which are ideally suited for cultivation. They
represent just about 12 % of all the species we offer and were selected
on the basis of ease of cultivation, esthetics, and their useful
properties. So if you do not know where to start with the Chilean
plants, the seeds from this list are the sure way to go. All of the
seeds listed here are easy to germinate and the seedlings to maintain,
and the adult plants are not too demanding. Most of the species are
ornamentals and there are a few shrubs and trees, selected mainly for
the their nutritious fruits. |
USAGE CATEGORY: Ornamental Plants
Here you
will find plants which we believe to be very ornamental. This criteria
is somewhat arbitrary, and you may not have ever heard about some
plants included here; this does not mean that they are bad; simply, few
people tried them or no information and/or seeds was available about
them. We strongly believe that some of them will become staple
ornamental species in a short time. |
USAGE CATEGORY: Edible Plants
Chile has
many edible plants which have a high potential of becoming commercial
or semi-commercial exotic fruit crops. Once again, no much information
was available on their nutritional properties and commercial
potentiality, but we are convinced that about 12 -16 species will
eventually become widely known and commercially grown. |
USAGE CATEGORY: Medicinal Plants
The name is
obvious, and many of these plants have not yet been investigated
properly; their medicinal properties are based on literature, sometimes
dating back as far as 17th century. Local Indians have widely used
these plants, and many of these plants may still hide secrets to be
unveiled. |
USAGE CATEGORY: Rare Plants
These are
plants which are rare and/or endangered in Chile. You can help preserve
rare plants by planting and propagating them, so as to create a genetic
pool back-up in case the Chilean wild populations go extinct.. |
LIFE FORM CATEGORY: Trees
These are
obviously regular-size trees, although some of them can be kept
small Bonsai-style and cultivated indoors. Many high mountain
tree species are especially well-suited for this type of cultivation. |
LIFE FORM CATEGORY: Shrubs
Here you
can purchase larger sized shrubs (higher than 60 cm.). |
LIFE FORM CATEGORY: Perennial
Plants
These
plants are ideally suited for potting since they are small, and most of
these are very hardy. |
LIFE FORM CATEGORY: Annual Plants
These are
annual plants: they have the advantage that you can grow them in
very cold zones and you do not have to worry about their survival in
the winter. Since they are usually prolific seed producers, you will
always have a good supply of seeds for the next year. |
LIFE FORM CATEGORY: Bulbous Plants
The bulb
plants have the same advantage as the annuals: even if not all of them
are extremely hardy, you can always dig up the bulb at the end of the
season and plant it in the spring. Plus, they are easy to propagate
vegetatively. |
LIFE FORM CATEGORY: Pigmy Plants
These
plants are ideally suited for potting since they are small, and most of
these are very hardy. |
LIFE FORM CATEGORY: Climbers
Climber
plants. |
ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS
CATEGORY: Hardy Plants
If your
coldness zone is adequate for these plants (most of them can be grown
all over Europe and coastal and southern areas of the United States,
-15º C is the minimum guaranteed temperature, although some may
withstand more), then you will have relatively worry-free plants for
outdoor cultivation once you have established them. |
ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS
CATEGORY: Plants For Interior
These
plants are ideally suited for indoor cultivation since they do not
require strong light exposure. |
ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS
CATEGORY: Plants for Dry Areas
These
plants are suitable for areas where water is scarce or you do not like
spend much time watering these plants. These plants may not be suitable
for very wet areas, and in general are not be very hardy. |
