This is a low shrub, of about 1 m. high, evergreen, branched, with the grey-colored trunk. The leaves are coriaceos, seem to be thick, entire, opposed, with the central nerve very prominent, lanceolate-ovate, attenuated towards the base. The flowers are white, with 4 petals, and many white, long stamens. The fruit is a orange-colored berry, somewhat oblong, of about 1 cm., with the rest of the calyx at the lower tip. It contains, as many mirtaceae do, a few greenish reniform seeds. It bloomsin December - January and bears fruits in February - April.
This plant grows at medium elevations of the southern woods, sometimes almost reaching the upper limit of woods. Almost always it grows under the protection of higher trees (generally nothofagii). It prefers the shade, high humidity, and soils withhigh organic content. So it frequently grows along the borders of rivers, lakes, and similar. Since it grows in areas where the snow cover persists during months, it is very tolerant to cold,. and can perfectly resist -10? C.
