Rhodophiala andicola (Aņaņuca de los volcanes)
This is a Rhodophiala of the Southern Andes of Chile, very characteristic of the volcano landscapes - it has rather small flowers, pinkish-red in color, which generally do not open as much as the other Rhodophialas (they are bell-shaped), giving thus an impression of being even smaller (this may be the result of the harsher climate). It may be less impressive than the other Rhodophialas due to its smaller size of the flower, short stems, and the fact that the flowers are solitary, but it is surprising how well this plant copes with the harsh conditions of the high mountains and barren soils - it is indeed a special pleasure to discover a delicately looking flower on a black lava slope covered with razor-sharp stones"

Rhodophiala splendens (Aņaņuca esplendorosa)
This is one of the most beatiful flowers of the Central Andes of Chile - it is big, and its brightly-colored flowers lightens up the barren slopes with red spots in the early spring, sometimes competing with the brightness of glistening snow, creating a truly otherwordly Alpine landscape. The flower presents itself with almost no leaves when it flourishes, which often heigthens even more the contrast with the surrounding - red flowers on bare stems on yellow sand, white snow, black stones, andnothing else.

Alstroemeria aurea (Alstromeria dorada, Amancay, Liuto, Rayen-cachu)
Another interesting Alstroemeria. It is one of the first to be taken out of Chile for propagation and it served as a genetic pool for creating new vaireties. It is rather high (reaching up to 1 m), so it is best suited for outdoor growing. Not very demanding, but still you need to provide good watering and good, rich soil. Snow-hardy and can resist frost down to -15š C.
